Student Services and Support

At the Wilmette Institute, student support is not separate from the learning process; it is an essential part of it. We are inspired by the Ruhi Institute, which examines the meaning of the phrase “I walk a path of service.” This path of service has certain characteristics that help inform the development and operation of the Institute’s programs.

“It [the concept of walking a path of service] requires of the individual volition and choice; it calls for a set of skills and abilities but also elicits certain qualities and attitudes; … it may seem easy at the outset but becomes more challenging further along. And crucially, one walks the path in the company of others.” (Universal House of Justice, 12 December, 2011)

“This is the nature of capacity building: Someone accompanies you as you learn to walk the path by yourself. If you fall, there is somebody close by to give you a hand. Mistakes are accepted. Confidence is gradually built.” (Ruhi Institute)

Our programs invite students into a form of study that involves not only academic engagement, but reflection, consultation, action, and sustained participation in a learning community. Because this kind of learning is often more reflective, participatory, and process-oriented than students may have previously experienced, we recognize that it can be both meaningful and demanding, especially within the context of work, family, service, and the many responsibilities students carry in their daily lives.

For this reason, student services at WI are grounded in accompaniment: walking alongside students as they navigate the opportunities and challenges of the program. Our goal is not simply to help students complete courses, but to support conditions in which meaningful learning, perseverance, and growth can occur.

To All Students: We encourage you to reach out early and often when questions or challenges arise. Whether you need academic guidance, technical support, or simply someone to help you think through how things are going, we are here to help. You will also have opportunities to connect with alumni mentors who have previously navigated the program.

You are welcome to schedule a meeting during office hours to discuss questions, concerns, academic planning, or strategies for successfully navigating the program. More student resources are listed below, by category.

Student Well-Being & Community

Alumni Mentorship Program: At enrollment, students are matched with alumni mentors and invited to connect with them regularly throughout their studies. Mentors offer orientation to the program, encouragement, practical guidance, and a supportive space for reflection as students navigate the opportunities and challenges of their learning journey.

Learning Community Check-In:
(for additional support or connection at any point in your studies)

In addition to your alumni mentor, this check-in provides another way to stay connected with the learning community. Learning journeys often include periods of uncertainty, stress, or transition. You are welcome to share concerns, ask for support, or simply let us know how things are going. This check-in is offered as part of our commitment to accompany each and every student throughout their Certificate Program experience.
