Born in Eatonton, Georgia, during the Jim Crow years, my parents moved to New York City when I was just four months old, sparing me the experience of racial segregation. For the first five years of my life, we lived with extended family, including my parents (Henry and Ollie), brother (Charles), paternal grandmother (Rosa), aunt Ann, uncle Au Wing, and Chinese cousins Wong Fat, Choy Gun, and Moy, likely due to financial reasons. At the age of six, we relocated to St George’s, Bermuda, where I enjoyed an idyllic childhood until the age of eleven when we moved to a neighborhood in Providence, RI, which proved to be somewhat of a traumatic experience.
Upon turning 18, I moved to California and pursued a major in Music and commercial music in college, aiming for a career in recording studios. Despite receiving encouragement and support, I found the pressure overwhelming. I have been writing songs since the age of 14, a passion I still pursue. Some of my songs can be found on the album ‘En Trance,’ released in 2002. One notable achievement is the co-writing of ‘International Jamboree’ with John Barnes and Vella Cameron, performed by Herb Alpert during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. A recording by John Barnes’s group, Madagascar, is available on Spotify and YouTube.
At the age of 19, I embraced the Bahá’í Faith after researching various religions. I have remained dedicated to serving the Cause of God ever since. My main hobby is playing competitive tennis regularly. Since 1994, I have operated an insurance agency, conducting business in 17 states. I am blessed with an amazing wife, five talented children, and a growing number of inquisitive grandchildren.
