2020 Courses Featured in New Online Catalog
The Wilmette institute has published its 2020 Course List in a slightly new format. The list is still tentative, but courses are now organized with a numbering system so you can see at a glance which courses fall under which departments and sections. The course numbering system will also make it easier to find courses in the new online Course Catalog, which contains course descriptions, current information on fees for all courses, and contact info for the Department Chairs.
How does the numbering system work?
a) Each Department or Section has a two digit code
- Independent Sections
- AL = Arts and Literature/Writing
- CA = [Bahá’í] Community and Administration
- Department of Bahá’í History and Texts
- HS = [Bahá’í] HiStory
- AT = Authoritative [Bahá’í] Texts
- ST = Sacred [Bahá’í] Texts.
- MF = Department of Marriage and Family (includes Relationships and Parenting courses)
- Department of Religion, Theology and Philosophy
- RL = ReLigion
- PT = Philosophy and Theology
- SC = Department of Social Change/Transformation
b) The 2-digit department code is followed by a 3-digit number. For example:
- SC070 Fostering Moral Excellence in Business
- A course in the Social Transformation department
- RL023 Exploring the Book of Revelation
- A course in the department of Religion, Theology, and Philosophy, Religion section
- ST331 Bahá’u’lláh’s Revelation: A Systematic Survey
- A college-level course in the department of Bahá’í History and Texts, Sacred Texts section
Courses in the zero-level series (001 through 099, like the first two courses in the list above) may be taken by anyone, regardless of educational background. Courses with course numbers in the 300 series such as the third course in the list above may be taken for college credit, or taken on a non-credit basis like our other courses.
How the Numbering System Applies to College Courses
Students who wish to take a course for possible college credit will be asked to fill out an application for credit form indicating whether they are currently in an academic program or have applied to be in one, and what level of study is appropriate for them. There are three options:
- 100 level: simple undergraduate, suitable for junior college
- 300 level: advanced undergraduate, suitable for someone majoring in a related subject or attending a university with higher expectations
- 500 level: basic Master’s degree, which can be tailored to the student’s needs based on the research paper they write
What this means is that 3 students can take the same course (example ST331 Bahá’u’lláh’s Revelation: A Systematic Survey) at the same time, but at different levels, and their transcripts will bear different course numbers.
A student who chooses the 100 level will be taking ST131
A student who chooses the 300 level will be taking ST331
A student who chooses the 500 level will be taking ST531
A New, Systematic Way to Publish Information
The Catalog updates automatically every 5 minutes. This means when a new course is added, or a course description is updated, the changes will be automatically published. There are currently 102 courses in the Catalog, and 63 courses (including eight 365 courses) in the 2020 list. The first page of the Catalog is a Table of Contents, which shows at a glance all the Departments and Sections, and the number of courses in each department. Clicking on any of the entries in the Table of Contents will take you to the page you need. Note that you will not see page numbers or page breaks in the document. This will make printing a section of the document easier. Simply highlight the text you want to print, and ask your printer to print “Selection,” or “Selection only.” See screenshot below.
The Institute expects that this Catalog will become THE place to go for the latest information on courses. This will save staff time, and make the listings more reliable.
A Student Handbook (link to draft) and Faculty Handbook will also be published soon, in a similar format. These resources will be made available to the public, as is best practice in the world of online education.
