A Plan for a Deepening on the Four Valleys

The structure of the deepening is designed to promote discussion and thoughtfulness, rather than for me to teach a significant body of knowledge. The group who will be involved in the deepening knows much more than I do about the Faith and Scripture, so would be able to contribute from a great depth of study and experience.

The "other relevant scriptures" I list below are suggestions for my own use if participants do not think of others. The reason I refer to other relevant Scriptures is simply to see how this Work reflects ideas of Baha’u’llah’s Teachings that permeate the body of His Writings. The points I list for discussion are those that seem to me to be key, but are not exclusionary, nor might they all be discussed, given time limitations and the flow of interest in the group.

My purpose is to focus on the particular teachings of the Four Valleys, so that we become better acquainted with a difficult treatise and increase our understanding of the teachings of Baha’u’llah at this historical point in His Ministry.

The Purpose of the one true God, exalted be His glory, in revealing Himself unto men is to lay bare those gems that lie hidden within the mine of their true and inmost selves. (Gleanings 287)

O My servants! Could ye apprehend with what wonders of My munificence and bounty I have willed to entrust your souls, ye would, of a truth, rid yourselves of attachment to all created things, and would gain a true knowledge of your own selves - a knowledge which is the same as the comprehension of Mine own Being. (Gleanings 326-327)

Consider, moreover, how frequently doth man become forgetful of his own self, whilst God remaineth, through His all-encompassing knowledge, aware of His creature, and continueth to shed upon him the manifest radiance of His glory. (Gleanings 186)

Whoso ariseth among you to teach the Cause of his Lord, let him, before all else, teach his own self, that his speech may attract the hearts of them that hear him. (Gleanings 277)

Whatever duty Thou hast prescribed unto Thy servants of extolling to the utmost Thy majesty and glory is but a token of Thy grace unto them, that they may be enabled to ascend unto the station conferred upon their own inmost being, the station of the knowledge of their own selves.

Therefore, hath it been said: "Knowledge is a light which God casteth into the heart of whomsoever He willeth." (Kitab-i-Iqan 46)

Whoso followeth this counsel will break his chains asunder, will taste the abandonment of enraptured love, will attain unto his heart's desire, and will surrender his soul into the hands of his Beloved. Bursting through his cage, he will, even as the bird of the spirit, wing his flight to his holy and everlasting nest. (Gleanings 321)

Strip yourselves of every earthly affection, and hasten to embrace your Beloved. (Gleanings 322)

O SON OF JUSTICE! Whither can a lover go but to the land of his beloved? and what seeker findeth rest away from his heart's desire? To the true lover reunion is life, and separation is death. His breast is void of patience and his heart hath no peace. A myriad lives he would forsake to hasten to the abode of his beloved. (Persian Hidden Words 4)

Lift up the veil that obscureth your vision, and dispel the darkness with which it is enveloped, that ye may gaze on the naked beauty of the Beloved's face, may behold that which no eye hath beheld, and hear that which no ear hath heard. (Gleanings 320)
